DeFineArt

an unconventional art event

PRESENTS

Dear Printmaking Friends

I’m very excited to share with you an exhibition opportunity that I have helped create titled “Postcards to Venice”. It is a global invitation for a unique traveling art project that will be held in an amazing venue in Venice during the upcoming 2024 Biennale. “Postcards to Venice” will be one part of a multi-nation, multi-curatorial event at the prestigious Palazzo Pisani-Revedin , as seen here, and is an open call for all art universities, or art institutions to participate as a group.

The idea is a simple one that is aligned to the 2024 Biennale curatorial concept of Foreigners Everywhere.  As artists, art administrators, and faculty we know the enormous difficulty in finding high level international venues to exhibit our institution’s art works in. Costs of space, shipping, customs, and curation are overwhelming, but by sharing resources, and benefits I’m convinced we can all move towards discovering a more inclusive and affordable shared model. I firmly believe art universities and their students must set an example for how to create a “new economics” for the art world both for our students, and ourselves as artists.

The art  postcard  is a fun, beautiful, and conceptually interesting way to travel art across borders while maintaining a clear curatorial standard for the work itself. Getting work to be seen in Venice to crowds of thousands for 8 weeks is an opportunity we should all embrace. In 2022 the Venice Biennale had over 800,000 ticketed viewers. Estimates suggest that more than 1,000,000 paid visitors will attend this year’s Biennale.

- Further benefits include each university getting an Artsy exhibition via the SHIM Art Network. Seen here is the University of Wisconsin/Madison link. Artsy is the world’s largest art e-commerce and archiving site that estimates 2.3 million viewers per month. Currently no art universities have contracts for this incredible resource. This event will now make it possible for art schools to host current and former students, faculty and alumni on this site.

-The price of each postcard is fixed at $100. Simple, low cost, high value original art works.

We are hoping to receive up to 1,000 postcards from artists and art universities from around the world as a visual metaphor for how artists can learn to become global art travelers. Please see the details for this below.

University Participation

Guidelines

STEP 1

Each art institution can enter up to 20 students or faculty. The reason is that this event includes a downloadable catalog.

STEP 2

Each page can hold 20 artists' work (5 rows of 4 artists).

STEP 3

Each artist fills out an online form that will automatically get uploaded to Artsy via @shimartnetwork.

STEP 4

Each form includes space for 2 unique postcard images. (In case one sells before Venice.).

A third image of any type, size, or price will also be included in this form. That work will not travel. There will be a 30% commission on this work, but only if it sells via the Artsy online show. That commission would go to SHIM for all the work they’re doing to make this possible.

PARTICIPATION FEE

The cost of this event is $500 per institution. This helps cover the Artsy upload, digital catalog, and event space in Mexico City.

NOTE: Shipping of the artworks to and from any exhibition space is not covered by this participation fee.

DEADLINE
